私は、材料を探しに行くと廃盤の革や金具に惹かれることが多くToko Cylinderで使用している床革(とこがわ)もその一つです。
あまり市場に流通しない床革は一般的にはとても薄いので張り合わせて加工されていることが多く、本革に見せかけるように売られているものがほとんどです。SSSRでは床革の見た目に加えて、耐久性、機能面も成り立つ厚みのあるものを選んでいます。このように分厚い床革自体はとても珍しくおそらくもう手に入りません。そういったヤバい革との出会いから生まれたシリーズで、床革という素材自体の持つ魅力を楽しんでもらえたらと思い作った幻のような商品です。
ブライドルレザーの床革(とこがわ) 特に繊維の密な背からお尻にかけてのベンズ部分を使用したシリンダー。
ダークグレーと鈍く光る黒革のコントラストが高級感を醸し出す。
小物入れ、鉢カバー、ゴミ箱、用途は自由。

革の表裏を逆にし、裏面をダークグレーに手染めしています。
側面の留め方は、高級紳士靴の閂(かんぬき)のディテールで手縫いすることで、頑丈でより手の込んだ高級感のある仕上がりにしています。 底面は、すっきりとした 煙突 のようなディテールを作りたかったので、接着剤のテストを重ね接着しています。色落ち防止のため底面は銀面側を下にしています。
ブライドルレザーについて:
革の表面に白く浮き出るブルームが魅力。元々は馬具用に作られた革。
タンニン槽に数か月漬け込み、さらに手作業で革の表面に蝋(ろう)などの油脂成分を塗り込み、繊維内部までたっぷり浸透させることで、より高い堅牢度を実現しています。その油脂成分が浮き出たものをブルームといいます。ブルームは徐々に消えていき革の色が現れてきます。製法によってはブルームのないブライドルレザーも存在します。
床革(とこがわ)について:
革の表面側の層(空気に触れる側)のことを“本革”といい、革の表面側の層(本革)を取り除いた内側の層の部分を“床革”といいます。 光沢のないマットな質感が特徴です。表皮層がないため、本革に比べ耐久性は少し落ちますが、逆に本革にはない、質素な質感や曖昧さがあります。厚みも不均一で通常はじかれる“血筋”や“トラ”とよばれる生きた傷痕が現れているところも魅力です。本来、革製品を使用することは食肉の副産物であり大変理に適った行為ですが、床革を使用することもまた環境負荷を軽くすることへ繋がります。
